Mac Pro spec'd for video editing

Organized by Joe Hills

Like my work? Give me an extra 10-15 hours a week!
Processing video footage is incredibly resource intensive. Even though my laptop has a fast hard drive and a decent amount of RAM, there are huge performance gains to be made by upgrading to a desktop system with a RAID array and more cores.

When I record Minecraft footage, Snapz Pro X dumps raw frames onto the hard drive and encodes them after the session is complete. Currently, there's about a 1 to 1.1 ratio of time spent recording Minecraft to time spent transcoding raw footage into usable footage. This is a huge time sink for me, as even unusable footage I cut, like routine in-game travel costs me extra time on the back-end.

While post-game encoding is bad, at least I can go do dishes or read. The second problem I'm running into is that when I edit footage for my Minecraft and Pitfalls and Penguins shows, there are a lot of small tasks that take from a few seconds to half a minute to process. My laptop can handle single camera footage without too many of these delays, but when I'm dealing with footage from multiple cameras at once, it becomes a continuous cycle of clicking, waiting, watching, clicking, waiting, etc. This would be where the biggest time savings for me would arise, and would help me do multi-camera Minecraft editing in the future as well.

I know it seems like a lot to ask, so I set a distant deadline for this because I have no idea what to expect in terms of response.

I hope that if you enjoy my work and are fortunate enough to be in a good financial situation that you'll contribute to making my life easier and my videos better. If so, I thank you greatly!

Even if you can't chip in due to financial constraints, know that I appreciate the time you took to read this message, the time you spend enjoying my videos, and the comments you leave.

Gratefully yours,
Joe Hills
